Quotes from It Does Not Die. These two books should be read one after the other. I am so touched by the depth of this book.

Retrieved 6 April In my review of Mircea’s book I came away from it thinking he suffered from more than the usual young man’s vanity and lack of self-awareness, and wondering why people seemed to think it was a good romance or that Mircea’s avatar Alain was a sympathetic character.
This book is supposedly written under the shade of the writer’s own life, Maitreyee Devi. In her account, Maitreyi Devi was intrepid and set an example as a confident author doing justice to not just literature but to herself by catharsis. I feel a connection to immortality and timelessness and love.

More than forty years passed before Devi read Bengal Nightsthe novel Eliade had fashioned out of their encounter, only to find small details and phrases, even her given name, bringing back episodes and feelings she had spent decades trying to forget.

Her relationship with Mircea while he was living in her house and studying under her father forms the core of the book, both for what it moarw-maitreyi at the time and for how it effected her life afterwards. Notwithstanding that it is a translation and there are many spelling and grammar typos moare-maotreyi the book, I found it riveting and heartfelt.
I cannot say I liked it but I didn’t dislike it either, although it is a tedious, lengthy book and not very well written.
The film was a huge hit because of its melodramatic picturization. Thus it qualifies for a genuine, poignant romance that incurs true passion. It doesn’t stop me from still liking a great deal of his works, but it’s in spite of his personal character, and definitely not an endorsement of it. Taken together, the New York Times dragosteea the two novels as “an unusually touching story of young love unable to prevail against an opposition whose strength was tragically buttressed by the uncertainties of a cultural divide. Well, at least after reading this book I don’t blame ‘Allan’ from ‘Maitreyi’ so much It took me a while to read this and now I don’t remember much, so I don’t know what to say In short, this is a book written by someone with much more emotional maturity, much more craft, and much more empathy. Who knew the lack of scandal could be even more scandalous than scandal? Based on their relationship Mircea’s novel in Romanian Maitreyi was published in moare-maitreui Somewhat difficult to read because of the absence of editing, but a thoughtful and at times poetic must-read response to Bengal Nights.
Only a woman [wife: Varianta a moare-maitreyii Eliade este O data cu varianta sa de poveste de dragoste, aflam si detalii impresionante despre India anilor They are an interesting story about a colonial “love story”. It’s remarkable that it had left such strong imprints on the protagonists in real life Mircea Eliade and Maitreyi Devi that they penned it down independently in profuse detail after decades of detachment.
For a book that is often considered a “response” to Mircea Eliade’s Bengal Nightsand an attempt for Maitreyi to tell her own story of their adolescent romance, the most wonderful thing I got from this book is that it does a much better job of humanizing Mircea and making him sympathetic than his own book did.
